FACING THE SUNSET

The silhouette of the Scottish Highland soldier stands guard in all weather, fair or foul.

July 11'th,South St.,The Parade Square----------------------Here are some facts and information about the statue. It was designed by a Summer resident,Mr. Massey Rhind the famed Scottish sculptor. He chose a local veteran,Mr. Russell Zinck to pose for the project so as to have a face representative of the people of the area.Mr. Zinck had to travel to New York for the sessions. The July 3'rd 1922 Morning Chronicle said that the Highlander was "stern, watchful, full of reserved energy, ready,if need be,to offer himself a sacrifice in defense of all he holds dear".It said"he has a rugged and peculiarly Nova Scotian personality" whose character partakes the qualities of the granite rocks. The Village donated the base and steps of the war memorial and they were cut from a single granite rock by a Mr.Wakefield Zinck. It was unveiled on Aug.22,1922 by veterans Carl Mills and Ralph Hennigar.
Remember your freedom, liberty and our democratic system of government when you see The Highlander in The Parade Square.Canada would not be the country that it is today if it was not for the efforts and sacrifices of the men and women who fought the World Wars and other conflicts that threatened these most highly held ideals.
At the going down of the sun,we remember them.
