THE NATIONAL BLOOD SHORTAGE:YOUR LIFE OR THEIR'S

Oct.30,Chester and Everywhere---------------------While this may be an uncomfortable request for some it is nevertheless an important matter that we all should consider.Everyday, many of us go through life without any serious health concerns. The odd scrape or a head cold is no big deal. But major cuts, trauma and certain diseases and conditions require large amounts of blood to be introduced back into the body of ailing individuals. Also required are certain components of blood if not the whole substance.Again, many of us never give these situations a thought unless you or friends and loved ones have been there and realized the need.
South Shore Regional Health is also a victim of the blood supply shortage. They are encouraging all who can to attend a Blood Donour Clinic at The Nova Scotia Community College,Bridgewater Campus on Nov.5'th and 6'th between the hours of 1:00 P.M. TO 3:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M. TO 8:00 P.M.
chesterns.ca would like to thank a good friend of the site for bringing the situation of the low blood supply to our attention and we encourage all of our viewers to seriously consider going out and giving blood whenever and wherever you can. Most likely you will help a stranger. But when accidents happen, you may even be helping yourself or a friend. And deep down, let's be honest here,it will make you feel good.Call 1-888-2DONATE (1-888-236-6283)for more information or to make an appointment.

Reminder of Meeting Tonight

The Integrated Community Sustainability Planning (ICSP) Steering Committee will be holding the 2nd in a series of community meetings at the New Ross Legion tonight, beginning at 7PM. Any resident of the municipality is encouraged to attend any or all meetings at any location.

Oct.25'th,The Parade------------------------Over 86 years ago a magnificent sculpture was unveiled in the Village(Aug.4'th,1922). It is more than a heartfelt gift from the Scottish sculptor J. Massey Rhind. The statue of The Nova Scotia Highland Soldier is both a symbol of gratitude and respect to those sons and daughters of Chester who served in history's many conflicts for freedom and a work of art that conveys historic pride amongst Village residents. Many folks may not realize it but for several years now ,the Highlander has been the victim of senseless vandalism. Typically the problem centers around his bayonet which seems to be an easy mark for theft once an uncouthly ne'er-do-well makes the effort to climb up on the statue's base. Usually there is no damage and the bayonet is quietly found or returned to the Chester branch of The Royal Canadian Legion. This past Race Week saw the bayonet not only once again stolen but also damaged. After missing for a short time and being found in someone's lawn as if thrown like a lawn dart,an anonymous finder returned it to the Legion. This time it was not a case of a relatively easy replacement exercise. A tedious repair was in order.
Enter Chester resident,Brian Haase. Brian is a skilled welder at the Louisiana Pacific East River hardboard plant and with the support of his employer,he took on the job of restoring The Highlander's accessory weapon. As the photos show,Mr.Haase did an excellent job and saw the project through by reinstalling the bayonet on the end of The Highlander's rifle. Legion member Allan Mosher gave a helping hand in the project. And just in time for this years Remembrance Day.The old soldier once again stands on guard, keeping his diligent watch over The Village.A tribute to those who lost their lives in war and a symbol that makes us reflect upon and be thankful to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

HARVESTFEST CLARIFICATION

chesterns.ca would like to point out that The Harvestfest event held in Lordly Park last weekend is entirely organized by The Chester Volunteer Fire Department's Childrens Committee. When the event originated,The Chester Area Family Resource Centre was a co-organizer of the event but now, along with the other groups featured, are invited to participate to raise funds and awareness for their cause. We apologize for any misinformation that this may have caused to the groups involved and would like to thank our more discerning community-minded viewers for letting us know about this minor error.
As you may realize by now,the intent of chesterns.ca is to promote our community and engage the members of our community in being aware of events and happenings in and around The Village of Chester.

RON HYNES & DAVE GUNNING Hardworkin' Hands Tour

After show business. The stars touch base while selling their CD's.

Dave and Ron ham it up while posing for the camera.

Oct.18'th,Chester Playhouse---------------------It is becoming more and more difficult to to find words to describe events at the Chester Playhouse this year. Every show seems to be better than the last. From theatre to films to music. The manager and those in charge of programming have hit the mother lode in a vein of talent that is simply fantastic. Saturday night's concert by Hynes and Gunning was no exception. They poured their hearts out to a sold out audience of loyal fans. It was one of those rare shows where it was hard to tell whether it was the audience or the performers who got the most out of it. Dave is extremely talented for his years and his songs range from the humourous (Daddy's Beer) to the serious song about The Hermit of Gully Lake,Willard Kitchener MacDonald. Other numbers included "Cowboys Dream","Saltwater Hearts"and the tour's title "Hardworking Hands". Backing Dave up on bass was Allie Bennett from Cape Breton. Gunning commented that he was at a John Allan Cameron concert when he was eight years old. Stan Rogers opened for John Allan. And there was Allie Bennett backing John Allan. It is the stories and introductions like these that make Dave Gunning's talents all the more magical and riveting. This is one Canadian performer that is well on his way to becoming a national icon.
And speaking of national icons,Singer and Songwriter Ron Hynes gave a superb performance. As one listen's to Ron,powerful words become stronger with his voice and emotions. A good poem or prose makes an even better song with Hyne's musical talent. He had great rapport with the audience. Jokes and questions made for a relaxing atmosphere. He made known his views about down-loading music off the internet by singing,a cappella,a Nancy White song lamenting such deeds. He joked that he had "found it on the internet." Ron performed numbers off his last album"Get Back Change"and treated the audience to some new material that will be on his next release. The finale number was his signature "Sonny's Dream" for which Dave Gunning joined him. After thunderous applause all the performers came out for an encore of two more songs.
Songwriter, humourist, storyteller, balladeer, comic, bard and musician. These two gentlemen embrace the true meaning of the word entertainer.A top ten show for the ol'Chester Playhouse.
In a final note we must mention Allie Bennett's fiddling.During a break in Gunning's set he performed a few tunes in "The Cape Breton Style" and is a world class talent in his own right. He has just released his own recording of fiddle tunes after a long career of working with other well known performers and production work.

LOCAL LIONS GATHER TOGETHER TO GATHER

Some of the members of the local area Lions Club prepare for their annual clean-up along Highway #3 in the Chester area.

Oct.18'th,Marriott's Cove----------------------Local area Lions were out Saturday morning to do undo the effects of careless littering along a section of our main highway. This latest effort yielded 30 bags of trash and about a dozen larger items. After working their way along a section of highway, the bags are picked up by a fellow Lion and left at the local DOT depot garage in Marriott's Cove and staff there will eventually take them to the local landfill.
One further point to be made here was that after the clean-up,one of the helpers was traveling back over one of the newly cleaned up areas and there were two Tim Horton's cups freshly dropped at the roadside.Come on people, let's respect nature and the efforts of those who are trying to keep our area neat and tidy.

ARMSTRONG WINS LANDSLIDE VICTORY IN DISTRICT 3

The sign of the victor.

Oct.18'th,Chester------------------------------The results are in and candidate Brad Armstong coasted to an easy victory in the District 3 polls. chesterns.ca dropped by Armstrong headquarters to congratulate the new Councilor. In a brief discussion,Armstrong said it was a lot of hard door to door campaigning. He also thought that there should have been greater voter turnout regardless of the issues. He believes that road maintenance and snow removal are the big issues and possibly the concern for a public washroom in the Village. He will have a little bit of free time to prepare for his new position as the swearing-in takes place in early November.
For those interested, here are some numbers for District 3:

Armstrong--------------387
Heisler------------------110
Rendell------------------55

And some news on the contests in the rest of the Municipality. As of 8:20 p.m. it was reported that Sharon Church-Cornelius won handily as well as Allan Webber and Bob Myra

Bad Plan?

It's interesting how a supposedly laissez-faire promoting Republican administration all of a sudden has effectively nationlised many banks. Gordon makes a pretty convincing argument, however will this perpetuate the "too-big-to-fail" policy and consequences?

Oct.17'th,King St.-------------------------It is early morning on King St. as a crew from the commercial arborist company,Asplundh works to clear overhanging branches from around power lines. It is about time that this work was carried out as it seems that we lose power during less intense storms lately and often it is due to a wet limb or broken branch contacting lines and causing a short circuit. For more information you can go to www.nspower.ca/customer_service/safety/trees_power/index.shtml

New law, new monitoring technology raise concerns about privacy

A blog by Michael Geist about some current information on what's going in Canada with respect to some of these new technologies.

Recent Columns by Michael Geist.

How much do you want to rely on technology? Do we need it recording nearly every action performed online (do you know facebooks privacy policy or google's privacy policy?, for example regarding data retention time and what information is put up for sale? The productivity, entertainment, and economic benefits are here to stay with no clearly defined objectives in sight. Yet these same benefits are undeniably tied to the ability to harness this exact same data. It's how that data is protected and the output (useful information) is handled that should be a concern of any Internet or network user. These types of security and monitoring technologies have existed for decades in corporate environments, it's just becoming more feasible to apply to an entire customer base of an internet service provider, instead of say 2,000 employees in a corporate environment. Whether free services like facebook, google's stunning array of applications, youtube, online banking, my space, yahoo, microsoft's swath of services, and millions of other large data gathering sites across the globe, are truly free is a debatable point. The economic, and in many ways life sustaining benefits of developing these technologies are also undeniable.

Tough questions, I certainly don't profess to know the answer. With with the rapid advancement and development of newer, faster, data crunching "information production units" technologies wider spread, careful scrutiny and resulting input to policy are of utmost importance.

This may all sound a bit Matrix-esque, but science-fiction has many times changed to science-fact . Once the idea is out there...

Ben

Oct. 15'th,Chester Legion-----------------------Those citizens of Chester who haven't had their fill of politics lately came out to hear Candidates Brad Armstrong and Gordie Rendell answer questions about local concerns and issues affecting District 3 residents. A third candidate, Michael Heisler, declined to participate.
There were four prepared questions based on feedback and concerns from "folks on the street" and the two candidates present put a lot of thought and work in their responses. They handled the open questions from the floor equally as well. Both candidates were passionate and enthusiastic about Chester and it's politics. chesterns.ca will not give detailed comment on the evening's discussion. We prefer that you talk to your friends and neighbours and the candidates themselves to make a decision as to who you will vote for. District 3 is very fortunate to have an opportunity to choose a new Councilor after years of an unchallenged almost monarchal representation on Municipal Council. And, after last night's event, it is clear that we have good people running for the position.
If YOU have not voted at the advance poll already then MAKE SURE that YOU VOTE this SATURDAY. It is important for you and Chester.

Oct.8'th,Chester Legion-------------------------108 people came out to hear and meet the candidates running for the 2008 Federal Election in the riding of South Shore St. Margaret's. Political forums have been a tradition with V.O.C.T.A.D.A. for several years now. The aim is to give voters a chance to see the candidates in action fielding questions on local issues and concerns. And also for those running to meet some of the voters in the riding. Last night's event was a record in terms of attendance. There were many great questions. This kept the politicians engaged and on their toes. With 5 days to go until the vote there is not a lot of time left to decide who you will support. Talk to friends, call campaign offices, read the papers, watch TV or better yet, talk to a candidate. But no matter what, make sure you do get out and vote.It is an important right that we as Canadians all have.

NO MEETING TONIGHT

The regular meeting of The Village of Chester will not be held this evening due to the absence of some of the Commissioners. Please come out next month to hear about the concerns of running The Village.
If you are still hankering for a taste of politics, come on out to the All Candidates Forum at the Chester Legion this evening at 7:p.m. and observe politics at the highest level.Meet the candidates and hear them answer questions.

Oct.5'th,Shoreham Village--------------------------Well folks, this is a longer story with lots of photos but we at chesterns.ca feel that it is an important story for you to know about. One of the most important fire drill exercises in the Municipality of Chester took place Sunday morning at the Shoreham Village seniors complex. Chester Volunteer Fire Department hosted Fire Departments from Chester Basin,New Ross,Western Shore,Windsor and Hubbards to train on equipment and techniques. Under a bright sunny sky, the event went off without a hitch. One of the primary functions of the exercise for Chester was to see how their newest truck could perform. Chief Chafe commented that it was a good test for the new truck and it met or exceeded expectations. Also on hand were staff from The Municipality of Chester Building Department. Of note was our new Fire Inspector, Arden Weagle who was there to observe.
Just so the general public and taxpayers realize what is involved, here are some facts and figures for you to think about. Windsor's aerial truck was used because they are a neighbouring district (to the County line on Route 14) and they have two aerial vehicles. Lunenburg and Bridgewater Fire Dept.'s each have one. So as not to compromise their coverage Chester typically calls on Windsor first if they need such apparatus. With fairly decent recently paved roads and minimal traffic on Route 14,Windsor has about a 40 minute response time to our area.
For this exercise it took about a month with 30 hours of meetings to plan and organize for it. Including Firefighters, Police and Municipal employees there were +/- 50 people involved with over 500 man hours invested. There were 12 Fire Department vehicles involved along with 1 RCMP car and the Building Department's truck. Water was moved at the rate of 1000 gallons per minute for 1 hour. The vaue of all the equipment involved (from helmets and hoses to fire trucks) is about $6,000,000.00. The amount of 5 inch hose required to reach from the harbour to Shoreham Village is 2100 feet. While it is great to know that this scenario worked well and we have excellent help and equipment available, let us hope and pray that a real fire requiring such a response never happens. And if you meet a firefighter, thank them for their time.
