June 24'th,Chester------------------------After years of rumour and discussion, the Peninsula Canal has finally been dredged. At around daybreak this morning a contractor hired by the Municipality commenced digging out the sand and silt that had accumulated on the bottom over the years. There are people who can remember taking a small power boat through the canal years ago at any tide. Before this work there were days you could walk under the bridge practically barefoot and not get your feet wet.
Navigation under the bridge may still be a problem though at certain tides. According to one source there is still a very large rock at the western end of the canal that will not be possible to move. However it was likely there years ago as well so smaller boats should not have a problem with safe passage under the bridge.
