THE LAUNCH OF THE IOD SLOOP ENIGMA
Aug. 25'th,Gold River Marina---------------It was another milestone in wooden boat building in Nova Scotia today as Kilburn Marine and Tern Boatworks completed and launched the IOD sloop Enigma for the proud owners Peggie Findlay and Steven Bush.
Peggie and Steven decided to have the boat built about 2 years ago. In order for this to happen,Bruce Thompson needed to be accredited by the International Class Organization in order to have the plans released to him for construction to begin. Work began in earnest in March 2008.
The rest is an incredible chapter in wooden boat building in Nova Scotia. For Peggie and Steve, Nick Kilburn,Bruce Thompson and his team,Leigh Robertson and Gold River Marina and the local IOD fleet members it is a modern dream come true. A modern dream whose roots go back to the age of wooden ships and iron men. From the sleek and shiny painted hull, the polished metal fittings and the varnished bright work,Enigma is a work of art and craftsmanship as well as a serious racing yacht.
Under a warm and sunny sky on the shore of Gold River over 100 friends and wooden boat aficionados gathered for the event. Steve Bush spoke to the crowd thanking the builders and then turned the next stage over to his wife Peggie who christened the boat by pouring champaign over the bow and fore deck. About 10 minutes later Enigma was bobbing in the water after a graceful ride down to the edge of the river via the marine railway.
The launch of Enigma is an important cultural, industrial and economic milestone for a unique way of life in Nova Scotia.
chesterns.ca congratulates Peggie and Steve,Nick Kilburn and Bruce Thompson and his crew at Tern Boatworks for a job well done.
